Who this trip is for

This trip is for you who are an experienced skier or splitboarder, comfortable off‑piste and used to touring in remote terrain. You move steadily uphill, handle changing conditions, and are able to repeat that effort across consecutive days.

You approach the mountains with focus and adaptability, and are comfortable operating in an environment where distance, weather, and isolation shape each day.

The KMX Experience

You will spend your days ski touring on the west coast of Greenland, accessing terrain by boat and moving through deep fjords and remote mountain ranges. The sailing vessel acts as your base, allowing you to travel further into terrain rarely visited.

Each day is defined by conditions. Weather, snow, and scale set the plan, and decisions are made accordingly. Terrain is vast, distances are long, and movement is deliberate.

The goal is simple: reach the best available conditions, move efficiently through a raw environment, and ski lines in a landscape where isolation is part of the experience.

• Ski in a landscape defined by scale — ocean, ice cap, and steep mountains meeting in one continuous view.

• Move across glaciated terrain as the norm, with descents that run from high elevations down to the sea.

• Experience stable late-season snow influenced by the Gulf Stream, allowing full runs to the pickup points.

• Live aboard Aztec Lady, a 63‑foot expedition ketch combining functionality with comfort.

• Operate as a strong, small group, with the flexibility to adapt each day to weather, snow, and objective.

Competent touring and off-piste skier 

Skier or splitboarder with consistent touring experience and competent off-piste. Able to ski confidently in more complex terrain while maintaining fluid technique in all snow conditions. 

Typical terrain and skills required 

• Comfortable skiing complex alpine terrain and steeper off-piste slopes in a variety of snow conditions 

• Able to maintain strong, consistent technique across powder, wind-affected snow, spring conditions, and firm surfaces 

• Confident performing kick turns on steep skin tracks and moving efficiently during ascents 

• Experienced in the use of ski crampons, bootpacking, and other common ski mountaineering techniques including avalanche rescue 

Fitness requirements 

• Able to maintain a steady uphill pace of approximately 300–400 vertical metres per hour 

• Comfortable touring for 4–5 hours per day while carrying a backpack and touring equipment 

• Capable of ascending 800–1,200 vertical metres in a day while maintaining energy and control for the descents 

• Have endurance to perform multiple descents each day 

• Comfortable skinning continuously for extended periods and repeating similar efforts over multiple consecutive days 

First night: Hotel Maniitsoq

For an easy entry into the Arctic, the first night is spent at Hotel Maniitsoq, sitting above the town and harbour. Rooms are modern, functional, and well-equipped for a clean start before the field.

Most rooms face the archipelago or the Apussuit glacier.

The restaurant has wide coastal visibility and serves dishes using local ingredients when available.

Rest of the week: Aztec Lady
Aztec Lady is a 21 m ketch built in 1977. Designed for robust performance in Arctic waters. The vessel includes a 24 sqm panoramic deck saloon, ensuring great views from comfortable sofas.

Capacity:

• 10 guests + 2 crew.

Cabin layout:

• 2 cabins with two bunk beds

• 1 cabin with four bunks

• 1 cabin with a double bed

Shared facilities:

• 3 toilets

• 2 showers

This setup provides a stable base of operations while at sea.

• Temperature and snow: Expect cold nights and days that can reach up to 10°, sometimes even higher. Cold fronts are still possible and weather can shift fast. Be prepared for sudden drops in temperature and new snowfall.

  
  

• Daylight: The midnight sun has not yet arrived, but there is no real black night in Maniitsoq in May. Only a weak twilight that fades more each day as June approaches.

You must have valid travel insurance for this trip. Your policy must cover, at a minimum:

• Emergency medical treatment

• Search and medical rescue including helicopter evacuation in remote or mountain areas

• Repatriation

• All trip activities, including off‑piste and backcountry skiing with or without a guide

We may ask you to provide proof of insurance before or during the trip. If you are unable to do so, we reserve the right to deny participation. In this case, it will be treated as a late cancellation.
